Conservatism in Hollywood

1 comment:

  1. It is nearly impossible to turn on the TV, go to the movie theatre, or surf the internet without being bombarded by news of another Hollywood star endorsing one of the prominent Democratic candidates or news of yet another anti-war film opening soon. Clearly the Hollywood community has a strong leftist bias and more importantly these individuals are outspoken about these views. The prominence of liberals in the entertainment industry begs the question are there any conservatives left in Hollywood and if so what are they doing to combat this overwhelming prejudice?

The truth is there are some conservative celebrities, although most casual consumers of mainstream media would be hard pressed to find them. Among the ranks of what Helena Andrews of The Politico refers to as the “closet” conservatives are Oscar winning actor Robert Duvall, former Frasier star Kelsey Grammer, and CSI: New York protagonist Gary Sinise. Three of the most widely acknowledged and outspoken conservative-minded members of the entertainment industry are Joel Surnow executive producer of Fox’s hit 24, comedian Dennis Miller, and now notorious Mike Huckabee supporter Chuck Norris. Despite the high profile nature of many of these celebrities liberalism continues to dominate the vast majority of media produced in the United States. People of all ages were subjected to Rosie O’Donnell’s ranting on the View and Kanye West’s ridiculous comments at a 2006 awards ceremony, while the media approved by playing them over and over again.

Conservative voices are often silent in Hollywood due to the threat of reprisal and because of the sheer number of anti-conservative projects that have recently been produced. Films such as Rendition, In the Valley of Elah, No End in Sight, and the forthcoming Stop-Loss present strong anti-war messages and serve overwhelmingly to further a Democratic party talking point. Interestingly enough the Washington Times remarks that the conservative movement in Hollywood is stronger outside of the realm of politics. Projects that focus on traditional conservative themes emphasizing patriotism, good vs. evil and American ideals on average gross ten times what the anti-American movies listed above brought in.

In a speech at The George Washington University Ann Coulter reiterated this point asking the audience to explain why, if conservatism is floundering do audiences desire stories built upon the same principles as the modern conservative movement. The reason seems plain enough to me, Americans approve of patriotism and our way of life in this nation. Furthermore these themes provide hope and a way to move forward in an uncertain time, whereas oftentimes liberal movies attempt to tear down much of what this country stands for. With a presidential election looming hopefully more conservatives will take it upon themselves to step forward and voice there opinions in an attempt to counteract the liberal slant of Hollywood.
